This year has been rough for fourteen-year-old Scott Chester, especially since his father died while serving for the military in Afghanistan. He and his mother depend on each other more than ever. He barely survives his first day of high school in suburban Minneapolis, thanks to a run-in with a group of bullies. But Scott has no idea that his life is about to be loaded with strange happenings. After he goes to bed early one evening, Scott is awakened in the middle of the night by a loud explosion in his backyard. When the police investigate, they find a large crevice in the forest floor on Scott's property. As a series of unusual events begins to unfold, Scott learns that a group of men from far away have been sent by his late father. They are sent to protect and assure the boy that he has the strength within to survive his monumental loss. But what no one knows is that anyone who crosses Scott's path is in for a world of hurt. He also discovers a treasure in the midst of it all.
