James Lee McDonough is professor emeritus of history at Auburn University and the author of numerous titles on the Civil War, including Shiloh-In Hell Before Night and Stones River-Bloody Winter in Tennessee.
Thomas L. Connelly (1938-1991) was professor of history at the University of South Carolina and the author of Army of the Heartland, The Marble Man: Robert E. Lee and His Image in Society, and Autumn of Glory, a two-volume history of the Army of Tennessee.
