Book One:
Johnny is a ten year old boy who,whilst playing in the forest,sees a strange boy watching him.Calling out,Johnny hopes for a new friend,but,the child scurries away.Johnny thinks about the boy at dinner,remembering how his face was smeared with mud,and his eyes looked sad.
The next day,Saturday,he sets off,complete with a lunch in hopes of sharing with a new pal.The forest is dense in places,and small streams run through it.It is whilst Johnny is sitting,listening to the bullfrogs,that he turns,only to encounter the peculiar boy.Little does he know it,but Johnny's journey into a adventure far beyond his imagination has begun....
The boy in the forest introduces himself as Abijah.He teaches Johnny how to catch fish,and shows him where he sleeps,a cave hidden in the rocks.But,as Johnny discovers;Abijah has lost his family,who also live somewhere deep in the forest.
Soon enough,Johnny realizes that there is something other-worldly about Abijah.As well,time moves forward quickly in the forest.Whilst Johnny is often only playing for an hour or so,it can be a whole day,and night in this mysterious land.He makes sure to wear his watch,to track his real time.The pair set off,with Wolf,Abijah's protector;in search of the forest boy's people..
But,luckily for Johnny,he's always back in time for supper.Well,almost.
