Zusammenfassung

This book comprehensively reviews the structure, optimization strategies, and functions of natural and synthetic peptides. The contents of this book present foundational aspects of therapeutic peptides, examining the potential of bioactive peptides derived from natural sources and providing insights into the structure-function relationship of therapeutic peptides. Therapeutic Peptides: Advances and Applications also covers the de novo design, synthesis, modification, and mechanistic evaluation of therapeutic peptides, along with the generation and screening of peptide libraries for cell-binding peptides. The second section focuses on the practical applications of therapeutic peptides in combating cancer cells and treating neurological disorders using natural and synthetic neuropeptides. The book also covers the potential of peptides in addressing metabolic disorders and their roles in cardiovascular diseases through natriuretic peptides. The final section addresses the regulatory and safety aspects critical to the pharmaceutical development of therapeutic peptides. It covers quality specifications, regulatory considerations, and future prospects for therapeutic peptides. The discussion also covers the toxicity of biologically active peptides and safety aspects. This book is an invaluable source for researchers and students of pharmaceutical sciences, biotechnology, and biomedical sciences.

Nisha Gaur is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Biotechnology at Gautam Buddha University, India. She serves on the editorial board and reviewer for several reputed journals. Her research interests include the development of nanomaterials and peptides to combat microbes, as well as the microbial degradation of organic and inorganic pollutants. Dr. Gaur has authored more than 23 research articles in peer-reviewed journals, contributed 25 book chapters, and edited two books. She is also a member of the Association of Microbiologists of India.

Santanu Sasidharan is a Michael Smith Health Research Trainee at the Michael Smith Laboratories (MSL) and the Department of Physics and Astronomy at the University of British Columbia, Vancouver, Canada. He has served on the editorial boards of several scientific journals. His research focuses on developing next-generation therapeutics, including small molecules, peptides, antibodies, and vaccines, targeting infectious diseases, as well as advancing the understanding of protein biochemistry. Dr. Santanu has authored more than 40 research articles in reputed journals, contributed 16 book chapters, and holds three patents. He is an active member of The Protein Society, the Biophysical Society of Canada, the Society of Biological Chemists, and the British Society for Parasitology.

Nagendra Singh is the Head and an Assistant Professor in the Department of Biotechnology at Gautam Buddha University, India. His research interests encompass structural biology, protein biochemistry, structure-based drug design, and protein crystallography. Dr. Singh has published over 70 peer-reviewed international research papers. He has received numerous awards, including the National Academy of Sciences of India (NASI) Young Scientist Award, the Venus International Foundation Young Scientist Award, the DST Young Scientist Award, the Meeting of Nobel Laureates and Students Award in Medicine from Lindau, Germany, and the Medal for Best Ph.D. Thesis. Dr. Singh is a member of the Indian Biophysical Society, the Indian Crystallographic Association, and the International Union of Crystallography. His current research focuses on elucidating the structure and functions of enzymes and proteins involved in RNA metabolism in both bacteria and humans.
