Zusammenfassung

Eight-year-old Patti is caught reading in her bedroom by her mother who warns her not to be a bookworm because no one will marry her. From this early start, she faces the enormity of her educational disadvantage and lack of family support with parents who are unschooled, unaware of the importance of education, and unable to offer nurturing or guidance. She finds a different source of validation by competing with her classmates academically. Despite good grades, her parents forbid her to attend college and disown her. Banished and without money, she makes her way to college. There she cautiously embarks on her path by emulating those she admires and rejecting negative influences. This inspiring autobiography from a female scientist and physician takes us on an adventure of learning, adaptation, and discovery. Biomedical research, including field work on epileptic baboons in Africa, earns her a PhD from UCLA medical school. The course of her own research takes her to Germany and England for three years, immersing her in a bold new academic and cultural experience. Confident that her background as a medical research scientist serves her, Patti changes her career to clinical medicine and receives an MD from Washington University. She discovers life as a physician to be her true calling, one that draws on expertise as both a healer and a teacher. As revealed through patient and personal stories, she gains empathy, compassion, and understanding of the importance of personal dignity. She finds everlasting richness in a balanced life of family and career.

Patti Nemeth, MD, PhD, received her PhD from UCLA Medical School and then began a professional career of teaching anatomy and conducting biomedical research. A part of her graduate training was an expedition to Senegal, Africa to capture and perform surgery on epileptic baboons in the wild, sponsored by the Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique, Marseille, France. For her post-doctoral work, as the recipient of an Alexander von Humboldt Scholarship from the German government, she attended the Goethe-Institut of language in preparation for her scientific research and teaching at the University of Konstanz in southwestern Germany. In her postdoctoral years she collaborated with scientists at the University College London as well as with colleagues at other European laboratories. On her return to the United States, she served on the faculty at Washington University School of Medicine where she taught human anatomy to medical students and established her own research laboratory. Her objective was to advance the understanding of the physiology and biochemistry of energy metabolism in muscle under various physiological and disease conditions. One of the projects was done in collaboration with NASA and the Russian Biosputnik space program to explore the effects of microgravity on muscle in space travel. Her research laboratory was federally funded by multiple grants from the National Institutes of Health and the Muscular Dystrophy Association. She has presented her findings at various professional symposia around the world and has published many refereed scientific papers and book chapters.A love of science and desire to help others prompted her to enrich her career with the study of clinical medicine. She returned to the classroom and received her MD degree at Washington University School of Medicine, followed by a residency in neurology and a fellowship in neuromuscular diseases. She developed a clinical practice group of neurologists in partnership with a well-established neurosurgical group at Saint Luke's hospital in Saint Louis and received several honors as a practicing physician nominated by her peers. In semi-retirement, she found further reward in treating patients in underserved and indigenous communities of New Mexico.
